Why Bulletproof Coffee Should be 1 of the 7 Deadly Sins




Have you ever considered putting butter in your coffee? I’m gonna take a wild guess, and say you haven’t. It might sound like a bad idea to you, but I can assure you that it’s not. Dave Asprey, the founder of Bulletproof and author of New York Times bestseller The Bulletproof Diet, is a Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur who has sparked millions of people to try Bulletproff Coffee. The basis of Bullet Proof coffee is to provide you with razor-sharp focus, mental clarity, and boundless energy. Having tested and tried this coffee myself, I can vouch for the claims that Dave Asprey is making. Upon drinking my first cup of Bullet Proof coffee, I felt instantly energized, and I was focused like I’ve never been before. There was something to this special blend of coffee, and I was hooked. Needless to say, I got away from being “Bulletproof” and it wasn’t until recently–when my girlfriend was interested in trying Bulletproof coffee–that I got back into being “Bulletproof” and I realized that I was ignorant for ever getting away from it. Just like anyone would do, Mr. Asprey presents a business with his “Bulletproof” line of products. I’ve tried several of his products, and they’re all legit. The only problem that you’ll run into with his products–is that they’re a bit pricey. For some, that won’t be a problem but for others–it will be. So, I devised a plan for you to enjoy Bulletproof coffee on a budget. Now some “Bulletproofers” will not agree with my plan, but this is for people who want to enjoy Bulletproof coffee, at an affordable price. After trying a ton of coffee (some good and some not so good) and with the help of my girlfriend (she’s a barista at Starbucks) I came up with this plan. In addition to my plan, I will also include the original Bulletproof coffee recipe. Have fun making this coffee, and let me know if you liked it (or not).


The original Bulletproof Coffee recipe

2 cups of hot brewed coffee made with Upgraded beans

Up to 2 tablespoons grass-fed unsalted butter

Up to 2 tablespoons Brain Octane MCT oil 


Here is my alternative Bulletproof Coffee recipe

One brewed Starbucks K Cup (Veranda Blend Blonde or Pike Place Roast)

Up to 2 tablespoons grass-fed unsalted butter. This ingredient is an absolute must. If you try this with salted butter, you will most likely throw up; it’s disgusting (trust me).

Up to 2 tablespoons MCT oil.

Add Stevia to taste.

Once you brew the coffee, put in your MCT oil, butter, and stevia (if you like). Blend all ingredients in a blender. I use the “Bullet” brand blender, but any blender will do. Blend for 20-30 seconds, and you’ve just made yourself one heck of a cup of coffee. There you have it. Not everyone is going to like this type of coffee, but that’s okay. It’s all about experimenting and seeing what works for you and your body.

To be honest, I’ve only tried it once, and that’s not enough to tell if worked properly. I’ll be giving this workout a trial run, and if it’s effective or not, I’ll let you know. The health and fitness industry is filled with some great people. Now more than ever, people are looking to get fit and healthy for various reasons. You might purchase a product, or sign up for a program, but do you really get to know the person behind the product? Chances are, no. That’s what separates Amy Von Rummelhoff from the rest of the health and fitness industry. She took time out of her busy schedule to tell me what she thinks about setting goals, how she got started in health and fitness, and how she overcomes setbacks. 

Justin Marroquin: When did you get interested in health and fitness?

Amy Von Rummelhoff: I grew up as a competitive figure skater and competed nationally in synchronized skating.  However, it was not until I nearly died in college from a very serious surgery and hit rock bottom, that I realized if I did not start eating healthy and learning to work out, my life would continue to slip through my fingers.  I became a gym rat pretty quickly and when I moved to LA in 2010, I worked as a trainer at Jackie Warner’s gym in Beverly Hills, and got into fitness modeling.  It was not until last year that I took the ultimate step to take the stage and compete among the best.  I have decided to commit my life to health and fitness, and recently took the position of managing the female line of MusclePharm, FitMiss.

JM: What was the process like when you first started out?

AVR: When I first started lifting weights, it was a guessing game of what to do. I was lucky enough to be working at a gym in San Diego, so I had trainers that helped me to get started.  I had no idea what was actually healthy; however, and although at the time I thought I was eating completely healthy, that was far from the truth. I love learning and have taught myself most of what I know today in the gym and in the kitchen.

JM: Do you believe in setting goals?

AVR: 100% believe in setting goals. I continually set mini goals in the gym to stay motivated— whether it be a photo shoot, a trip or a competition.

JM: How do you overcome a setback?

AVR: I am currently overcoming the biggest setback of all—trusting the wrong coach with my diet, and training last year— he destroyed my metabolism and thyroid.  It has been a very discouraging year to say the least; trying to reset my metabolism and staying 100% on track while getting VERY slow results.  I know in the end I will be better than I ever have, and I just stay motivated. I have a support group of amazing friends to lift me up as well when I am feeling down.

Justin Marroquin interviews Amy Von RummelhoffJM: What is your favorite part about being fit and healthy?

AVR: I feel better day in and day out.  I get sick very easily, and I love seeing my body change and get stronger week after week.

JM: Who has had the most influence on you in your life?

AVR: My mother is my best friend and biggest support.  She has been there with me through the lowest points of my life, the challenges I have encountered, and every competition I prepped for! I don’t know where I would be without her and her amazing support.

JM: How do you stay motivated?

AVR: I set mini goals and track my progress.  I always try to change something about the exercise  I am doing by increasing the weight, or the number of reps.  This is the best way to see if you are in fact improving and getting stronger.

JM: What would be your #1 tip on how to become successful not only in fitness and health, but life itself?

AVR: Pick a goal and do everything you can to reach it.   Be a motivator and a positive influence in peoples lives, and you will see the reward.  Don’t compete with others— compete with your former self.  I know it sounds cheesy, but it is so true.  It is easy to feel unsatisfied when you are comparing yourself to someone else. They have different genetics, background and work ethic— and it is impossible to compare two people with different backgrounds and it can eat you up!
