Technology is growing at a rapid pace these days, and with all the new advancements and developments happening in the tech world, how can we possibly keep up? Meet Hermione Way. Journalist. Reality TV personality, and entrepreneur. Hermione also started Newspepper, an internet video production company. Interviewing Hermione, I had the chance to peer into the mind of a very smart and driven woman.
Justin Marroquin: What got you interested in the tech world?
Hermione Way: I started interviewing London’s entrepreneurs and startups in 2008, just as the tech community was starting to grow. I was fascinated by the nature of startups; Young entrepreneurs coming up with an idea to solve a problem and turning it into a profitable, scalable business.
JM: What obstacles have you had to overcome in your career?
HW:If you ever do anything that challenges or deviates the status quo people will challenge or hate you. You have to grow a thick skin and have the confidence to know what you are doing is right.
JM: You are a busy woman. How do you balance your life?
HW: Juggling. It’s a hard thing to learn but once you master it, you can keep adding more balls.
JM: Of all the things you’ve done, what’s been your proudest moment?
HW: My proudest moment was high-fiving Richard Branson at 30 mph on my kite board in the Caribbean ocean.
HW: It’s exciting because it changes every day. Companies you thought were doing well today, close down tomorrow. Startups you thought were stupid ideas sold for billions of dollars. It’s all quite ridiculous, but also entertaining.
JM: What’s the worst thing about the tech world?
HW: Self obsessed, egotistical, misogynistic men who think they are god because they went to YCombinator, or got Tim Ferriss as an investor.
JM: What motivates you?
HW: I truly believe we are living in times when the internet will change everything. It’s never been easier to build something and truly change the world. Look at what Khan Academy has done for education—it started as a bunch of YouTube videos, and now it’s a global million dollar company—that’s changing the way children learn.
JM: Do you set goals?
HW: I set loose goals, but I don’t kick myself if I don’t reach them. I don’t like to plan too much, I like to along with life and see where it takes me, although I do like some level of structure.
JM: How do you want to be remembered?
HW: I’m planning on living until 150, so hopefully I won’t be remembered for a long time! As someone who gave it her all, tried her best and lived a full and exciting life.
JM: Give one piece of advice that has served you well in life?
HW: Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
